A Champion for Diabetes Patients

shutterstock_735649525.jpg

A champion for his patients, I recently heard Dr. Lowell Schmeltz of Associated Endocrinologists in Farmington Hills put very powerful words to the experience of caring for people living with diabetes. I cannot recreate the strength and inspiration of his words, but I can share what I took away from his short presentation:

  • Keep the education going. He encouraged us to share what we know, between suppliers, manufacturers, insurance companies, and doctors' offices. What are the new requirements for obtaining a device? What is missing in the documentation? Keep the conversation going for the sake of helping the patient. Always think about the patient.

  • My favorite single sentence that Dr. Schmeltz said was, “CGM is driving diabetes with your eyes open” because it offers such a poetic, understandable visual. With the G7 coming out in the next six to 12 months and the advanced iterations of the Libre, we are as close as we ever have been to a solution until we can learn to make pancreases work again.

  • His message to Healthy Living was his appreciation of our personal touch with patients. Don’t lose the patient touch. Provide the good care. We so value Dr. Schmeltz's positive feedback as we continue to put patient care first and foremost in our calls and interactions, while we work closely with referral sources as partners in care.

I was obviously wowed by this presentation. It was an honor to hear Dr. Schmeltz in person.

Check Out the Blue Cross Blue Shield Blog

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Blog is a great resource for members and non-members alike! It covers categories including community health, chronic disease, healthy living, care delivery, and BCBS news.

Check out their article “Know where to go: How to choose between the doctor’s office, urgent care and the ER.” This blog offers guiding advice to help you decide where to go when a need arises, based on the urgency of your health situation and your budget. Blue Cross Blue Shield suggests that you call your primary care doctor first in non-emergency situations. Urgent care centers are a good option if you can’t reach your doctor or need health care outside of regular business hours. Most of the time, the out-of-pocket cost of a visit to the urgent care is less than than you will pay for a visit to the emergency room. ERs are best for treating urgent, acute, and life-threatening conditions.

Healthy Living Medical Supply is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for insulin pumps, CGM, Omnipods, and testing supplies. Find out more about how we can serve BCBS patients and visit our Easy Enrollment page! We're also in network with most out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield plans when the member is a resident in the state of Michigan.

Healthy Living Partners with HAP to Better Serve More People Living with Diabetes in Michigan

Detroit, Michigan – Today, Healthy Living Medical Supply announced its new partnership with Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a health insurance provider and subsidiary of the Henry Ford Health System. Healthy Living will be in-network with all HAP plans, including HMO, PPO, and Medicare. This addition to Healthy Living’s list of insurance plan partnerships puts them in-network with all major insurance plans in Michigan.

Healthy Living moved its headquarters to Detroit in late 2016 with the intent of becoming more integrated into the City’s community, and becoming in-network with Detroit-based HAP is a memorable step in that process. “Although building partnerships outside of Michigan has been a recent focus for Healthy Living, a substantial missing piece of the puzzle for us has been a partnership with HAP,” said Jennifer O’Donnell, Director of Business Development & Pharmacy at Healthy Living Medical Supply. She continued, “We are enthusiastic about becoming more present in our home state of Michigan and providing outstanding customer service to HAP members.”

Healthy Living has been a leading home delivery company for diabetes supplies and maintenance medications for almost a decade. In-network with insurance plans across the country, offerings include diabetes testing supplies, insulin pumps, insulin pump therapy supplies, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems, and a pharmacy.

Founded in 1960, Health Alliance Plan (HAP) provides coverage to individuals, companies, and organizations, partnering with doctors, employers, and community groups. Serving more than 675,000 members and employing more than 1,000 people, HAP can boast that 90 percent of its premium revenue is spent on funding health care services for its members.

HAP and HealthPlus of Michigan recently merged, after Healthy Living had served HealthPlus members for many years. With their track record of excellent customer service with HealthPlus customers, Healthy Living was more quickly welcomed into the HAP family. Healthy Living is looking forward to serving former HealthPlus customers and other HAP members!

Healthy Living Medical Supply Announces Move to the City of Detroit to Better Serve Its Customers and Health Plan Partners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Healthy Living Medical Supply Announces Move to the City of Detroit to Better Serve Its Customers and Health Plan Partners

Troy, MI, August 16, 2016 – Healthy Living Medical Supply today announced its upcoming move to downtown Detroit, Michigan. Currently based in Troy, Michigan, Healthy Living has been a leading provider of mail order diabetes supplies and maintenance medications for almost a decade.

Healthy Living will relocate to the historic Palms Building on Woodward Avenue later this year and will become the only diabetes specialty provider and pharmacy located in Detroit, positioning the company to strengthen existing relationships and to build new ones. “With this move, we are investing in the future of both Healthy Living and the City of Detroit,” said Mike Lewis, CEO of Healthy Living Medical Supply. He continued, “We believe that our new location will enable us to better serve our existing customers, and to attract and retain the best team possible to expand our business in Michigan and beyond.  We are very excited to participate in the rebirth of a great American city.”

Cliff Grabowski, President of Healthy Living Medical Supply, noted that the upcoming move will place Healthy Living within walking distance of several major Michigan health plans, including Meridian, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HAP, and Aetna. He stated that “This is a natural move for Healthy Living, with several of our key health plan partners and a significant number of our customers residing within the City of Detroit. Our relocation will give us a stronger connection with the local diabetes community in a city full of renewed hope and inspiration.” Healthy Living has a large number of clients in Detroit, so the relocation also will enable the company to better focus on customer engagement and community service with the American Diabetes Association, JDRF, and other charitable, research, and support organizations.

The ‘Wear-a-Pump Challenge’ Teaches and Inspires the Healthy Living Team

Healthy Living strives to understand the challenges that people with diabetes experience every day. In the last year, seven Healthy Living Medical Supply employees walked in the shoes of their customers in the ‘Wear-a-Pump Challenge.’ Members of the team wore Medtronic and Tandem pumps for a week to take their training and empathy to a new level.

"Wearing the pump for the past three days has been an illuminating experience to say the least – my understanding of insulin pump therapy is MUCH better even after these few days." – Matt

Before wearing a pump, each employee went through extensive online and in-person training, and later in the week learned to place a new pump site and fill the pump reservoir. The greatest challenge for most participants was carb counting.

"Entering carbs was the hardest thing for me as I am used to just eating and not worrying about it, or I am just hungry and want to eat." – Crystal

The Healthy Living team found there were logistical considerations to take into account with the pumps, from showering and sleeping, to exercising and dealing with tubing.

"My tubing was too long and I got caught on many of the items in my house. On Sunday night, my tubing got stuck on something and ripped the infusion set out of my side and that did not feel good."   – Crystal

Matt had the opportunity to teach his own community about insulin pumps and raise awareness about living with diabetes.

"Just like me prior to starting at work at Healthy Living, most all of my friends/family had no idea what an insulin pump was prior to seeing one on my belt. It definitely provoked some good conversation." – Matt

Everyone had great feedback to share about this enlightening experience!

"It would take some getting used to." – April
"Overall, it is a great experience so far!" – Crystal
