Child sleeping (thinkstock.com)

Accu-Chek has released their new Guide meter, with many benefits including:

  • Spill-resistant and simple to take just one strip with the SmartPack vial
  • Simple to use by placing a small drop of blood anywhere along the end of the test strip
  • Anytime testing and easy to see with a strip port light
  • Automatic logging of results into an app on your smartphone
  • Accurate with reliable results you can trust – 10/10 accuracy
  • Manufactured in the U.S.A.

This is an excellent meter choice for pediatric patients - parents like the port light for ease of late night testing of a sleeping child. And having all of the blood glucose information on a phone means you don't have to manually record numbers in a paper log book.

Medtronic 670G Is Now Shipping!

Medtronic's much-anticipated new hybrid closed loop system is shipping. This product has the potential to help patients spend more time in optimal blood sugar range while lowering the number of treatment decisions that a patient needs to make each day.

Shipping Updates

Are you interested in getting started with the new 670G hybrid system? This is what you need to know:

  1. The Healthy Living Medical Supply Insulin Pump & CGM Therapy Team (Crystal & George) can help you navigate the process, including verifying your insurance and copays, obtaining qualifying bloodwork, and learning about your personal options.
  2. There is a backlog of the new continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors that are compatible with the 670G – the sensors will most likely not be available until November of 2017. For now, customers can get started using the 670G and then add CGM once it is available in late fall.
  3. For current Medtronic pump customers who are already using CGM with an older pump, you will need to hold off entirely on the new system until this fall. This is Medtronic’s policy so that you won’t have to go off CGM for the next 4-5 months.
  4. If you already have a pump, it needs to be out of warranty to qualify for a 670G. Contact us at 866.779.8512 (Option 2) to determine if your pump is out of warranty and what your options are!

Look for an upcoming blog with more details about the functionality and benefits of the Medtronic 670G.

Replay: Text me! The Benefits of Refill Reminders for Ease & Adherence

We know that our members can’t remain adherent without having their prescribed supplies and medications in hand. A refill reminder system can make a difference for many people, helping them stay on top of their health and compliant with doctors’ orders. At Healthy Living, once a customer enrolls and signs up for reminders, a text or phone call recording is sent every 30 to 90 days, about three days before the necessary reorder date to keep the patient on track with necessary supplies and medications.

text example 2.jpg

Response Rates Are Higher with Reminder Texts

The text reminder option has boosted adherence for Healthy Living customers. We have found that people reorder more readily and frequently via text. For every 100 outbound reminder texts, the Healthy Living customer service team hears back and ships orders for about 70 patients. In comparison, for customers receiving reminder phone calls, only about 30% of patients either confirm their reorder at the moment of the call or by calling back later. Text message reminders really help Healthy Living patients stay on top of their ongoing diabetes maintenance and health.

Adherence Isn’t Easy

In their Global Research Report, Vision & Reality (9th Edition) , Capgemini Consulting researched and found that patient adherence levels drop over the course of care, from 69% of patients filling their first prescription to 43% of patients continuing their treatment as prescribed after six months.

Capgemini defines ‘patient adherence’ as the extent to which a patient follows a prescribed treatment regimen, including taking a drug as prescribed and following physician advice. They identified these patient-related factors as setbacks to compliance:

·       Forgetfulness and attitude

·       Inadequate knowledge of disease and treatment

·       Perceptions of diagnosis and health risks associated with disease and treatment

·       Misunderstanding of instructions and follow-up routing

Can't Help but Love the Text Reminders

Healthy Living is using this study and similar information to help design processes to improve the entire patient experience. Here are some of the comments we have recently received from customers:

  • "Absolutely love that you text me when it’s time to order.  I'm a terrible procrastinator and have often run out of supplies in the past.  The text system is so easy I now always have my supplies. Thank you!"
  • “I love that Healthy Living texts me before I know that I need diabetic supplies for my daughter."
  • “Super friendly service. I've been better about taking care of myself since you've been sending me my supplies. Thank you.”
  • “I really like ordering via text message. I have nothing but positive things to say about Healthy Living. I am so glad to have found you.”

We are excited that we have found a new way to help Healthy Living Medical Supply customers stay healthier!

Healthy Living Speaker Series with Briana Greenlee – Fight Inflammation: The Root of Disease – a Recap

Learning about the Benefits of an Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle

Ongoing research has been making it more and more clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many illnesses, including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer’s. On Saturday, April 8, Healthy Living was honored to welcome Briana Greenlee, Registered Dietitian and Food Scientist, to speak with a group of employees and guests about the benefits of living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. Our Healthy Living Speaker Series event finished with a dinner prepared with an anti-inflammatory focus.

Why Is Chronic Inflammation Harmful?

Learn more about the mechanics of the inflammation process and what to do about whole-body inflammation, as explained by Dr. Andrew Weil.

    Dietary Choices

Your daily food and drink selections are a couple of the most important elements for keeping inflammation down in your body. What is an anti-inflammatory diet? As a broad answer, Briana recommended following the Mediterranean Diet. She also spoke about and prepared a handout with the more specific information below.

13 Fundamentals of an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

    1.     Boost consumption of fruits and vegetables. Aim to eat (4-5) servings each of fruits and vegetables daily. Choose produce with deep green, orange, yellow, and purple, as these have the greatest nutritional value.

    2.     Get at least (30) grams of fiber per day. Fiber keeps your GI tract moving.

    3.     (4ea) – half cup servings of alliums and crucifers per week. Alliums include garlic, onions, scallions, and leeks. Crucifers include cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts. These vegetables support your detoxification pathways.

    4.     Cook with unrefined oil. Olive oil is your champion when it comes to cooking. Make sure the oil is first cold-pressed, unrefined, and non-GMO. Oil extracted by chemical solvents and/or heat has the potential to go rancid and increase inflammation. Stay away from vegetable oils such as canola, sunflower, safflower, etc. [Check out How to Choose a Quality Olive Oil.]

    5.     Snack on whole foods. Processed foods may be tasty in the moment, but you’ll be hungry soon after. Snacking on fruits, vegetables, nuts, protein will tide you over until the next meal.

    6.     If you eat grains, make sure they are whole. White, refined grains have been stripped of their nutritional value and will spike your blood sugar.

    7.     Eliminate sugary foods and drinks. Sugar spikes your blood sugar and causes energy highs and lows, mental fog, irritability, sleepiness, weight gain, and cravings. Incorporate fruit as your dessert and try adding small amounts of cider, fruit juice, drinking vinegar, or citrus wedges to water to enhance the flavor.

    8.     Always pair carbohydrate-dense food with protein and/or fat. Protein and fat take longer to digest and keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day (ex. apple with peanut butter).

    9.     Eat organic eggs, dairy, whole-cut meat. Organic animal products have a lesser chance of contamination with pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, sewer sludge. Contaminants disrupt hormone balance that could factor in chronic disease.

    10.  Only buy foods in which you can pronounce the ingredients. If you don’t know what it is, then your body will not either. Put the box back on the shelf.

    11.  Eat fatty fish such as salmon, or walnuts, flax, chia seed (2-3) times per week (unless pregnant) to get more omega-3 fatty acids as they directly counteract inflammation.

    12.  Eat fewer fast foods. Reserve fast food for a special treat once in a blue moon.

    13.  Munch on pineapple. Fresh pineapple is high in Vitamin C and contains the enzyme bromelain which helps digestion and reduces inflammation in the joints.

    Keeping Chronic Inflammation at Bay

We learned that overall, you can maintain an anti-inflammatory lifestyle by:

    • Focusing on a whole food diet
    • Optimizing blood sugar
    • Exercising consistently
    • Sitting less
    • Keeping a healthy weight
    • Having an outlet for stress

Healthy Living Partners with HAP to Better Serve More People Living with Diabetes in Michigan

Detroit, Michigan – Today, Healthy Living Medical Supply announced its new partnership with Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a health insurance provider and subsidiary of the Henry Ford Health System. Healthy Living will be in-network with all HAP plans, including HMO, PPO, and Medicare. This addition to Healthy Living’s list of insurance plan partnerships puts them in-network with all major insurance plans in Michigan.

Healthy Living moved its headquarters to Detroit in late 2016 with the intent of becoming more integrated into the City’s community, and becoming in-network with Detroit-based HAP is a memorable step in that process. “Although building partnerships outside of Michigan has been a recent focus for Healthy Living, a substantial missing piece of the puzzle for us has been a partnership with HAP,” said Jennifer O’Donnell, Director of Business Development & Pharmacy at Healthy Living Medical Supply. She continued, “We are enthusiastic about becoming more present in our home state of Michigan and providing outstanding customer service to HAP members.”

Healthy Living has been a leading home delivery company for diabetes supplies and maintenance medications for almost a decade. In-network with insurance plans across the country, offerings include diabetes testing supplies, insulin pumps, insulin pump therapy supplies, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems, and a pharmacy.

Founded in 1960, Health Alliance Plan (HAP) provides coverage to individuals, companies, and organizations, partnering with doctors, employers, and community groups. Serving more than 675,000 members and employing more than 1,000 people, HAP can boast that 90 percent of its premium revenue is spent on funding health care services for its members.

HAP and HealthPlus of Michigan recently merged, after Healthy Living had served HealthPlus members for many years. With their track record of excellent customer service with HealthPlus customers, Healthy Living was more quickly welcomed into the HAP family. Healthy Living is looking forward to serving former HealthPlus customers and other HAP members!

Moved, Settled In & Glad to Be in Detroit

It’s been about a month since Healthy Living moved its headquarters to 2111 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. We asked Healthy Living employees to share how they like the new office space in Detroit and what they enjoy about working in Detroit. This blog features a compilation of pictures of our 11th floor office and the reflections we received from members of the team about our new locale!

What do you think about the new Healthy Living office space in Detroit?

I am thrilled with the new HLMS office in Detroit. The space looks great, the setup is convenient, and the views of the city are outstanding!

    -        George K

It is fantastic – our office is by far the best space I've ever worked in. The space is filled with natural light and we rarely have the lights on during the day - I love working by the natural light! And when we do use lights, they are high efficiency incandescent lights - we don't have any fluorescent lights in the space. All of the natural daylight exposure has a positive impact the overall feel and workplace atmosphere.

    -        Matt

Why do you like working in the City of Detroit?

I love working in the city. I can go and visit some of my favorite spots in the state on my lunch break.  Hart Plaza is a wonderful place to watch freighters float by throughout the year.  Also, the Riverwalk has blossomed into a haven for exercise.  I especially enjoy this area during the spring, where you feel safe while riding your bike through the city, while offering great views on Detroit and Windsor.

    -        Adam

It is exciting to be working in such a vibrant downtown central business district. I worked in San Francisco for four years and that was a fantastic experience – and Detroit is right up there with San Francisco in my opinion. The architecture, the friendly people, the culture, the public transit that exists (I take the bus to work on occasion).

    -        Matt

How do you feel about Healthy Living moving to Detroit?

I have always been a huge advocate of Detroit. I enjoy spending time here and know that it has much more to offer then most people realize. I am extremely proud to be part of a company that has invested in Detroit. Healthy Living Medical Supply and other businesses moving downtown will definitely accelerate the revitalization of the city.

    -        George K

What else is cool about the new location?

I love seeing so many projects that we can watch develop in front of our eyes. From Little Caesar's right next door, to New Little Caesars Arena being built across 75.  It is wonderful seeing Detroit blossom into what could potentially be a destination city for people throughout the country.

    -        Adam

The view from the space is amazing, with a 360-degree view of the city (we have windows on all four sides). We had a meeting with some partners from the West Coast last week, and we spent time strolling around the space, taking photos and enjoying the view of Comerica Park, Woodward Avenue, Michigan Central Station, the Central Business District, and even a portion of the Ambassador Bridge.

Meet the Awesome Ben, Healthy Living’s Newest Team Member

Welcome Ben! Our new accountant has been living in Michigan for 16 years and has spent most of his last 11 years working as an accountant at St. Vincent de Paul in Detroit.

Through web exploration, Ben came to the Healthy Living website, saw a job posting, and liked our Core Values. He applied, interviewed, and was hired! Ben has explained why the Healthy Living Core Values resonate with him:

“Healthy Living is centered on giving customers the best service, and in order to do this, employees need to be filled with acceptance and equipped with the tools they need. For employees to pass on values to customers, they must be satisfied to work with the organization. You can’t give what you don’t have inside.”

It's been about three months since Ben started at Healthy Living, and he says that he loves working here because the work environment is light and motivating. He looks forward to coming to work every day because he has connections with other employees. In Ben’s words, “Everyone is cheerful, wearing a smile, willing to help, and has teamwork and team spirit.” He feels like he belongs here.

Ben believes that his strengths that help him on the job are communicating well with coworkers and his supervisor, accepting constructive criticism, and focusing on teamwork. Ben feels that, “It’s okay if people have different perspectives in a team.” He is sure to wear a smile because it causes his day-to-day life to flow more smoothly.

Some of Ben’s favorite pastimes are tennis, walking in the park with his kids, bike riding, canoeing on rivers, yardwork, and vegetable gardening. And this is a great time of year for him because the fall season gives a lot that brightens his mood, including the cooler air, natural beauty and fall colors, and the Thanksgiving holiday.

“With great success comes great responsibility.” This is one of Ben’s favorite quotes, and he uses the expression when talking with his 18-year-old daughter and his niece. He tells them that if they want to be great and successful in their careers and their families, they need to take up responsibility and be accountable. That is the road to success.

We are grateful that Ben joined the Healthy Living Medical Supply team and we can see his smile every day!

Healthy Living Medical Supply Partners with Rocket Fiber in New Detroit Location

Healthy Living Medical Supply, a specialty provider of mail order diabetes supplies and maintenance medications, will be relocating this November from Troy to their new downtown Detroit office in the Francis Palms building in the Central Business District.

After being approached by Rocket Fiber, a new Detroit-based service provider offering gigabit internet speeds, Healthy Living chose to partner and benefit from their amazingly fast internet capabilities. Healthy Living will be the first business to be hooked in to this service in the Palms building, working with Stephen Sawyer, a representative from Rocket Fiber. The installation is still in process, with the goal of being up and running by November 1.

Fiber optics, brought directly into the 11th floor of the Palms building, will provide a faster and more effective internet connection than could be received by older and slower copper phone or cable lines. Healthy Living is looking forward to these mind-blowing internet speeds to help improve the customer experience and work more efficiently as a team. “To provide the best possible customer service and to allow our business to continue to develop and grow, we depend on robust, reliable, and secure IT services, and that is exactly what Rocket Fiber provides,” explained Matt Montagne, VP of Strategy and Innovation at Healthy Living Medical Supply.

Rocket Fiber provides internet speeds that are up to 1,000 times faster than the average residential connection in the United States. As of early July, Rocket Fiber has laid more than 20 miles of new fiber and set up more than 40 residential and commercial buildings online in the City of Detroit.

We Appreciate Sherece, Our Healthy Living Player of the Week!

Healthy Living Medical Supply continues to celebrate employee heroes this fall with our third Player of the Week.

Sherece was nominated to be Player of the Week by a Healthy Living team member who wrote: “Sherece always gives our customers high-quality care and does an excellent job of making sure our Brightree prescriptions for patients are up to date - this helps us ensure that customers never miss a delivery due to an expired script. Sherece has also helped out in our pharmacy over the past couple of weeks to help satisfy the increase in prescription enrollment for non-diabetes related medications.”
