A Beautiful Sunday Morning at the JDRF One Walk to Find a Cure for T1D

The Healthy Living table at the One Walk...check out the Jenga tower!

It was really a glorious morning for the JDRF One Walk on Sunday, a couple of weekends ago! There was a lot of great energy on the Detroit Riverfront with music, snacks, and kids’ activities (like bouncehouses)! Many teams, big and small, came ready to walk in support of their friends or family members with T1D.

Healthy Living sponsored a table, and we had a good chance to talk with a lot of people. We greeted them, offered stress balls and bubbles, and also had the opportunity to answer questions about our services. The hit of the morning at our table was giant Jenga. Many groups of kids played, and some of the race volunteers put a lot of concentration into the game. One young guy built a tower to the point where there were no more possible moves. (Check out the picture attached to this blog.) Very impressive!

JDRF always puts on amazing events, and we were proud to participate in this year’s Detroit One Walk.

Come Check Out the JDRF Summer Bash in the "D"!

Beacon Park Kicks Off Vibrant New Detroit Space

I just had a lovely visit to Beacon Park, located at the corner of Grand River and Cass Ave. Just a couple of weekends ago, the Park had opening festivities including concerts by Robert Randolph & the Family Band and Lord Huron, a movie screening, a Detroit makers market, food trucks, and a gospel brunch.

When I went to Beacon Park today at lunchtime, there were two food trucks (Bombay Indian and Chicken & Waffles), many people enjoying the day, beautiful gardens, live music, and kids and adults dancing in the center green! It was a happy place to be!

The park is 1.5 acres and is setting up to be like a second Campus Martius. Lumen, the park’s in-process restaurant (to have a green roof and rooftop seating) hasn’t opened yet but looks like it’s going to be vibrant and exciting! It’s scheduled to open in Spring of ’18. Beacon Park also has huge seesaws set up – I have to try them!

The park was financed by DTE Energy, and the DTE Foundation is funding the programming for more than 600 events planned at the park through the end of this year. Watch for more about Beacon Park and visit this awesome new space! Find out more about what’s going on at the Beacon Park Facebook page.

Getting Involved with Detroit Urban Farming is Easier than You May Think

Indisputably, one of the most exciting things happening in Detroit right now is the growth and community-building impact of urban farming, with nearly 1,500 gardens and farms across the City. This movement is helping to create a food system where all communities have access to fresh, healthy food.

Many people are really enthusiastic and encouraged by the work that is happening in the Detroit urban farming community and want to learn more but don’t know where to look. Whether you live in Detroit or not, here are 3 Awesome Ways to Get Involved:

  1. Participate in the 20th Annual Tour of Detroit Urban Gardens and Farms, hosted by Keep Growing Detroit. This year’s event takes place on August 2. Look at the variety of bus and bike tours that are offered to different areas of the City and sign up here.
  2. Volunteer at a farm that welcomes short-term helpers like Earthworks Urban Farm, Plum Street Market Garden, or Michigan Urban Farming Initiative. These gardens have scheduled volunteer hours each week when you can drop in and work.
  3. Sign up for Grown in Detroit CSA Shares. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) supports local farmers when you buy a share for as little as a month at a time, with pick-up once a week at the Plum Street Garden Market. Growers receive 100% of the profits from the produce sold.

Detroit Ranks Third in LinkedIn’s “5 Surprising Cities Rapidly Attracting Millennial Job Seekers”

Spring in Corktown

Spring in Corktown

Detroit made the list! LinkedIn recently released an article based on the job search behaviors of millennials in the U.S. on LinkedIn (which make up 44% of all job searches on their network). Where is this influential group looking to work and live?

Cities with the highest annual growth in job interest among millennials:

  1. Austin, TX
  2. Raleigh-Durham, NC
  3. Detroit, MI
  4. Cleveland/Akron, OH
  5. Charlotte, NC

Over the past year, interest in mid-size cities among millennials has grown 25% faster than large cities. LinkedIn notes that these aren’t (yet) the top cities where millennials have been moving to (over the past year these cities have been Seattle, Portland, and Denver).

LinkedIn sums up this millennial trend: “As the job market has evolved, millennials have continued to thrive and adjust, and as our findings show they are not shy of changing jobs or advancing their careers in less urban cities.”

As for us, there is no surprise that more millennials are looking to join us in Detroit. It’s an exciting place to be!

We Can’t Thank You Enough, Mr. Ilitch!

Taking a moment to thank Mike Ilitch, a Detroit Great!

Taking a moment to thank Mike Ilitch, a Detroit Great!

With this note of appreciation, Healthy Living joins the Detroit community in honoring a great man who has blessed our city with his vision, spirit, and leadership. Mike Ilitch not only brought championship teams to Detroit – he was a pioneer in the City’s revitalization that continues to gather momentum and flourish. Mr. Ilitch’s commitment to reawakening downtown Detroit has allowed us and many others to work in and enjoy the City as we do today.

He built a foundation.

Mr. Ilitch had a dream of what downtown Detroit could be. Way back before investing in Detroit was stylish, Mike Ilitch was building a foundation for the grand Woodward Avenue Central Business District and the rebirth of the city. He paved the way for many companies and small businesses to move into the city from the suburbs to be part of the life and excitement of the Motor City.

He created a legacy.

The ‘first step’ was Ilitch’s restoration of the Fox Theatre in 1988, when it became the new headquarters of Little Caesars and open for theater and concerts once again. Some especially remarkable pieces of Ilitch’s downtown Detroit legacy include:

·       Owning and investing in the Detroit Red Wings & Detroit Tigers

·       Building Comerica Park

·       Restoring and re-opening the Fox Theatre

·       Starting and growing the Little Caesars empire

·       Creating Little Caesars Arena (opening Fall 2017)

Learn more

He cared about the community.

Ilitch’s contributions to our city have ranged from immense and wide-reaching to community-based. Mike Ilitch started the Little Caesars baseball program 40 years ago before he owned the Tigers. It has been renamed Detroit Caesars Baseball in honor of Mr. Ilitch. Many younger players have benefited from the opportunity to play on his teams, and this is just one example of Ilitch’s investment in the community.

He was dear to many.

Recently, there was a great article in the Detroit News where Al Kaline was interviewed about his friendship and time with Mike Ilitch. Kaline played on the Detroit Tigers for 20 years – his entire career. He was loyal to the Tigers and developed a close relationship with Mr. Ilitch. After he retired as a player, Kaline was hired into the front office, became the Tigers’ color commentator, and then later became Ilitch’s special assistant.

Read more about Kaline’s experience in his own words.

His impact is broad and will be long-lasting.

Because of Mike Ilitch’s work, Healthy Living is situated in our new home – the Francis Palms Building on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. This area is vibrant, and the energy helps us attract and retain the best people. On the near horizon, the QLINE (M-1 Rail) is coming into service this spring, and the Little Caesars Arena will be ready for action this fall.

Thanks to Mr. Ilitch, things are only getting better. His leadership and legacy will never be forgotten, and Mike Ilitch’s vision will continue to be an inspiration to us and our commitment to the Detroit community.

Moved, Settled In & Glad to Be in Detroit

It’s been about a month since Healthy Living moved its headquarters to 2111 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. We asked Healthy Living employees to share how they like the new office space in Detroit and what they enjoy about working in Detroit. This blog features a compilation of pictures of our 11th floor office and the reflections we received from members of the team about our new locale!

What do you think about the new Healthy Living office space in Detroit?

I am thrilled with the new HLMS office in Detroit. The space looks great, the setup is convenient, and the views of the city are outstanding!

-        George K

It is fantastic – our office is by far the best space I've ever worked in. The space is filled with natural light and we rarely have the lights on during the day - I love working by the natural light! And when we do use lights, they are high efficiency incandescent lights - we don't have any fluorescent lights in the space. All of the natural daylight exposure has a positive impact the overall feel and workplace atmosphere.

-        Matt

Why do you like working in the City of Detroit?

I love working in the city. I can go and visit some of my favorite spots in the state on my lunch break.  Hart Plaza is a wonderful place to watch freighters float by throughout the year.  Also, the Riverwalk has blossomed into a haven for exercise.  I especially enjoy this area during the spring, where you feel safe while riding your bike through the city, while offering great views on Detroit and Windsor.

-        Adam

It is exciting to be working in such a vibrant downtown central business district. I worked in San Francisco for four years and that was a fantastic experience – and Detroit is right up there with San Francisco in my opinion. The architecture, the friendly people, the culture, the public transit that exists (I take the bus to work on occasion).

-        Matt

How do you feel about Healthy Living moving to Detroit?

I have always been a huge advocate of Detroit. I enjoy spending time here and know that it has much more to offer then most people realize. I am extremely proud to be part of a company that has invested in Detroit. Healthy Living Medical Supply and other businesses moving downtown will definitely accelerate the revitalization of the city.

-        George K

What else is cool about the new location?

I love seeing so many projects that we can watch develop in front of our eyes. From Little Caesar's right next door, to New Little Caesars Arena being built across 75.  It is wonderful seeing Detroit blossom into what could potentially be a destination city for people throughout the country.

-        Adam

The view from the space is amazing, with a 360-degree view of the city (we have windows on all four sides). We had a meeting with some partners from the West Coast last week, and we spent time strolling around the space, taking photos and enjoying the view of Comerica Park, Woodward Avenue, Michigan Central Station, the Central Business District, and even a portion of the Ambassador Bridge.

We're So Happy to Be in Our New Detroit Home!

It's our kick-off morning. The sun is shining in Detroit, and we're all settling into our new spaces. And great news - the phones are ringing and our technology is set up for business! The biggest excitement is seeing our Healthy Living line-up on the Tigers scoreboard!

This morning we walked in the Palms Building past a crowd of fans camping out to get tickets to their favorite concert at the Fox Theatre box office. There is definitely a lot of energy here and we are glad to join in!

Here's a big welcome to Healthy Living from Comerica Park, our neighbors right across the street!

Healthy Living Medical Supply Partners with Rocket Fiber in New Detroit Location

Healthy Living Medical Supply, a specialty provider of mail order diabetes supplies and maintenance medications, will be relocating this November from Troy to their new downtown Detroit office in the Francis Palms building in the Central Business District.

After being approached by Rocket Fiber, a new Detroit-based service provider offering gigabit internet speeds, Healthy Living chose to partner and benefit from their amazingly fast internet capabilities. Healthy Living will be the first business to be hooked in to this service in the Palms building, working with Stephen Sawyer, a representative from Rocket Fiber. The installation is still in process, with the goal of being up and running by November 1.

Fiber optics, brought directly into the 11th floor of the Palms building, will provide a faster and more effective internet connection than could be received by older and slower copper phone or cable lines. Healthy Living is looking forward to these mind-blowing internet speeds to help improve the customer experience and work more efficiently as a team. “To provide the best possible customer service and to allow our business to continue to develop and grow, we depend on robust, reliable, and secure IT services, and that is exactly what Rocket Fiber provides,” explained Matt Montagne, VP of Strategy and Innovation at Healthy Living Medical Supply.

Rocket Fiber provides internet speeds that are up to 1,000 times faster than the average residential connection in the United States. As of early July, Rocket Fiber has laid more than 20 miles of new fiber and set up more than 40 residential and commercial buildings online in the City of Detroit.

Healthy Living Medical Supply Announces Move to the City of Detroit to Better Serve Its Customers and Health Plan Partners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Healthy Living Medical Supply Announces Move to the City of Detroit to Better Serve Its Customers and Health Plan Partners

Troy, MI, August 16, 2016 – Healthy Living Medical Supply today announced its upcoming move to downtown Detroit, Michigan. Currently based in Troy, Michigan, Healthy Living has been a leading provider of mail order diabetes supplies and maintenance medications for almost a decade.

Healthy Living will relocate to the historic Palms Building on Woodward Avenue later this year and will become the only diabetes specialty provider and pharmacy located in Detroit, positioning the company to strengthen existing relationships and to build new ones. “With this move, we are investing in the future of both Healthy Living and the City of Detroit,” said Mike Lewis, CEO of Healthy Living Medical Supply. He continued, “We believe that our new location will enable us to better serve our existing customers, and to attract and retain the best team possible to expand our business in Michigan and beyond.  We are very excited to participate in the rebirth of a great American city.”

Cliff Grabowski, President of Healthy Living Medical Supply, noted that the upcoming move will place Healthy Living within walking distance of several major Michigan health plans, including Meridian, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HAP, and Aetna. He stated that “This is a natural move for Healthy Living, with several of our key health plan partners and a significant number of our customers residing within the City of Detroit. Our relocation will give us a stronger connection with the local diabetes community in a city full of renewed hope and inspiration.” Healthy Living has a large number of clients in Detroit, so the relocation also will enable the company to better focus on customer engagement and community service with the American Diabetes Association, JDRF, and other charitable, research, and support organizations.
